Looks like Funko may not be the only company tossing valuable product.
Reddit user u/LATIN0 posted a picture on the forum, reporting that he came across around six pallets of Magic: The Gathering cards in a Texas landfill. Other users looked at the pictures, spotting boxes and cards from MTG sets such as Modern Horizons II, Unfinity, Secret Lair, and Magic: The Gathering 30th Anniversary. The 30th set represents highly sought-after cards from the Alpha Edition, including the coveted Black Lotus. They did the math based on this intel and figured out that this would be around 7,000 cards, booster packs, and sets worth an estimated $200,000.
The user who found them said that he and a coworker grabbed a couple of boxes out of curiosity even though you’re not supposed to take things out of the landfill. Sadly, neither of them found any super valuable cards [videos and images of the cards he got here and here]. When u/LATIN0 went back, the remaining boxes had already been covered up by new trash.
That story was crazy enough until another Redditor pointed out that just days earlier, there was another thread in the same subreddit from someone claiming that $60,000 worth of unidentified game cards meant to be delivered to an unnamed convention arrived covered in some mystery chemical.
FWIW, I zoomed in on both pictures and the boxes didn’t look the same, but you can check out both pictures below and let me know in the comments what you think. Also, u/LATIN0 did not mention the cards he found being noticeably chemical-y.
I doubt we’ll ever get any explanation about how the MTG cards ended up in the landfill in the first place. If the makers of MTG did trash the boxes, they’ll probably never confirm it. Most likely, it was a distributor who couldn’t move them and decided to throw them out.
The next Magic: The Gathering set to be released from Wizards of the Coast will be March of the Machine on April 21, 2023.
