There’s trouble in Funkoland.
Funko revealed during a recent earnings call that it has more product in storage than it can afford to keep, and therefore, plans to send between $30-$36 million dollars with of POP! Vinyl figures to the landfill. The company also announced it would be laying off 10% of its workforce.
Despite collectible sales being up 24% in 2022, Funko cited waning demand for the pop culture vinyl toys, combined with an overabundance of inventory as a driving factor in the decision and noted in a press release that eliminating the excess inventory will help to “align with the operating capacity of our distribution center.”
Basically, they have too much product and it’s costing them more money to store the products than it would be to just trash them and write them off. It’s also cheaper to dump them than to lower than brand’s value by discounting them or shipping them to comic book stores or donating them because they’ll likely owe a license fee for any inventory not destroyed.
Business is business, but it’s a shame to just throw out millions of dollars worth of collectibles. Is recycling an option? I say we compromise: Toss the Machine Gun Kelly POP! and donate the rest to causes like Toys 4 Tots or do what this dude’s company did. Think of the good publicity!
Below is a video that someone posted to Reddit that allegedly shows a bunch of POP! boxes at a landfill in Washington state. What are your thoughts on Funko’s decision to just throw away all of its excess inventory? Let us know in the comments!
