Legendary toy company Toy Biz, which became Marvel Toys in 2007, has been back in the news after its official Instagram account announced plans for a comeback earlier this year.
Let’s get Toy Biz’s history out of the way first for anyone who doesn’t know it/wants to brush up. Feel free to skip to the next paragraph if you don’t need the explainer:
Toy Biz began in Montreal, Quebec as Charan Toys in the early 1980s. It was renamed Toy Biz in 1988 and became an American company. It held the master toy license for Marvel line from 1990 to 2006 before merging with Marvel Entertainment Group in 1998 to form Marvel Enterprises. In 2005, ME rebranded to incorporate the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Toy Biz was renamed Marvel Toys in 2007. After Marvel Entertainment went bankrupt and Hasbro bought the master toy license for Marvel Comics, Marvel Toys’ website was quietly closed down.
This brings us back to present day news/rumors. Toy Biz was legally acquired by a private investor in January 2022 and registered as ToyBiz Ltd in the UK. On January 2, the company’s official Instagram account announced that “Legendary Comic Book Heroes Will Return in 2023!” Later in January, two more posts explaining and answering questions went up, welcoming fans to post more questions they want answered. As of March 5, no additional “Let Us Explain” Instagram posts have gone up, but the account has answered questions in the comments.
Here are screen caps from Instagram with explainers. Yes, that last picture was inexplicably posted in that terribly hard-to-read font. Let us know what you think about a potential Toy Biz return in the comments!
