Netflix has made two big announcements over the past 24 hours. The first announcement was that it will be officially shutting down the service that began it all: DVD rentals. (Don’t worry, we had no idea that Netflix was still offering DVDs either but if you’re feeling nostalgic, you can go to https://dvd.netflix.com/.) The last DVDs will be mailed out on September 29, 2023.
Fun fact: The first DVD Netflix ever shipped was Beetlejuice in 1998. Streaming services were offered beginning in 2007, and the rest is history. I remember the days when we watched the remake of Battlestar Galactica and tried to catch up on Breaking Bad through Netflix DVDs. Meeeemories.
The second announcement is one that way more people care about: Netflix revealed that it will begin cracking down on password sharing in the United States in the second quarter of 2023. Back in February, Netflix began cracking down by rolling out “paid sharing” plans in Canada, Spain, Portugal, and New Zealand.
No pricing as been revealed yet for the “paid sharing” plans in the U.S. but Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters said in an earnings video that it will be in a market-by-market basis, meaning more “affluent” countries will pay more for the password sharing option.
What are your thoughts on Netflix ending their DVD service? End of an era or about time? How about their cracking down on password sharing? If you use someone else’s account, will you pay them the extra or get your own Netflix account? If you’re the one whose account is shared, will you pay for your friend/family to use it or make them get their own? Let us know in the comments below.
