Yesterday, Deadline reported that actor Matt Berry (Laszlo in What We Do in the Shadows) is in talks to star in the upcoming Minecraft movie starring Jason Mamoa and directed by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite). There are no details about what role Berry will play or about the plot of the movie in general.
The Minecraft movie is a live-action version of the Mojang sandbox video game. Even if you’ve never played Minecraft, if you’ve ever been around a child between the ages of, say 6 to 12, you’ve probably seen them wearing some form of Minecraft clothing. Our 8-year-old has no fewer than 10 Minecraft t-shirts, like 6 pairs of PJs, underwear, and socks. Oh, and Minecraft bed sheets and a “Creeper” stuffed animal. It’s a whole thing, and I don’t think he’s even played Minecraft in at least a year at this point. (Roblox, Smash Bros, and Zelda are our current jams.)
Anyway, the movie is scheduled to hit theaters on April 4, 2025, and although we’ll more than likely see it, I hope we’ve grown out of our Minecraft merch phase by that point.
P.S. Season 5 of What We Do in the Shadows is back on FX on July 13.
