Last week Variety reported that due to uncertainties with the WGA strike, Universal Pictures, Sony Pictures, HBO, Netflix, and Disney and its subsidiaries Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm are not currently planning on having any panels for San Diego Comic-Con 2023.
Essentially, the WGA* failed to meet a deal with AMPTP**. If SAG-AFTRA*** also cannot strike a deal with AMPTP by the June 30 contract deadline and they go on strike, then actors will are expected to join writers and show-runners in sitting out from big promo events like SDCC.
This means big, upcoming properties like “Ahsoka,” “The Marvels,” “Loki” Season 2, “Haunted Mansion,” “True Detective” Season 4, “House of the Dragon,” “Stranger Things” Season 5, The Last Voyage of the Demeter, and more won’t have any large presence at the Con this year.
Other studios like Warner Bros. has not announced their plans yet, instead opting to wait and see what happens in regards to promoting their upcoming DC films Blue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Warner Bros. streaming service, Max, will be bringing some animation titles to plug at SDCC.
As of right now, Paramount Pictures is still planning on holding a panel for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem while its streaming service, Paramount+, has yet to commit to any panels for any of its “Star Trek” shows.
This year’s Comic-Con will be held July 19 – 23. Geek. Dad. Life. will be on a panel with fellow Toy YouTubers called “ToyTubers Unite!” It will be held on Saturday, July 22 from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. in the Neil Morgan Auditorium in the San Diego Central Library.
Will you be at SDCC this year? Let us know in the comments! We hope to see you there, whether its around the convention floor, in a panel, at our panel, or at a meet-up that we’re hoping to pull together.
